“JUSTICE: Why Do We Have to Say Their Names?” was created from the idea of demanding hope for the future. There are two children depicted in it, and they are to represent black children whose lives were stolen from them. Whether it be by an act of violence or systematic issues, their childhood innocence doesn’t last. We know the names of Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, and Nolan Wells, all because of the injustices they’ve faced, and each of them barely made it to adulthood. Underneath the colors in the background, there is a faint adult silhouette. It is purposely hidden in the background, because the children represented by this piece never got to see what their adult lives could be.
