I made this piece because hope is a concept I keep returning to in uncertain times. Queer hope and queer joy have so much to offer us. People sometimes frame hope as just a way to ignore reality, but in times of pain or turmoil, I believe hope is an opportunity to imagine what we want for the future; for our communities, for ourselves—a radical choice to ask what is possible, a way to ask what can be done, what is next? Hope is not only for the imagination but a radical choice to believe in what can be possible and a tool to find a way to bring that dream to fruition.
Valerie Win Liu is a Burmese-Chinese-American Mixed Media Artist, Illustrator, and Designer from the Bay Area. Valerie likes to explore themes such as Joy, Queerness, Love, Safety, Grief, Humor, and discovering ways to encourage/spotlight self-expression through curiosity, compassion, and community. In their work and their community practice, Valerie encourages the audience to confront their own feelings through consideration, compassion, and humor.
